The Young Design Programme is a design project which I am involved in, which highlights working with students from schools/colleges and looks at improving/updating/re-designing aspects of their establishments. As the first stage (which ran from October - December) has now come to an end we (my team Steph, Lauren and Alice) are now in the second stage which is process of putting all our research, visits to the school and presentations to help us achieve a final outcome. We have decided to focus on the dining area and outdoor eating space and redesigning this to be more of focal point of the school. As the students are the main influence we have to take them on an Inspiration Day which will provoke their thoughts and give them ideas of how they would want the dining areas to appear. I have been researching into several spaces like Urbis in Manchester with its trendy, urban and modern building that has an edgy structure and it has an outdoor area which is appealing and befitting of the building (will show them how two spaces work together). Decided that Clarence Dock may be another area that will inspire and make them think about their space. Also the mix in materials (metals, glass, stone etc) made me think it would be useful to visit as it would give them more of a wider range of materials to think about rather than usual materials. Another place that I came across was Meanwood Urban Farm...it may not be the most obvious choice but it is all made from sustainable material but is yet modern. This is similar to Clarence Dock as the mix of materials will expand their knowledge and make them more open minded. If anyone has any other places they have been to that may be of inspiration please let me know:-)
