Sophie Calle- Take Care of Yourself

Sophie Calle is an esteemed French photographer, installation artist, author and collaborator. Her subject matter focuses frequently on the role of the Voyeur, and often allows herself to be the one observed and analysed. He past pieces include getting her mother to hire a private investigator to follow her around, aiming to recieve photographic proof of her own existence. She herself has admitted that she looks forward to emotional and often shocking events so she can use them for her own art. 'Take Care of Yourself' is a personal response to a break-up letter addressed to her. Calle printed this letter out and sent it to 107 women of varying proffessions; policemen, doctors, psychologists, illustrators and so on, asking them all to create their own 'proffessional' response. the result is a medley of film, text sound and image. I love the whole idea of sending her problems out to the women of the world for a response. I can imagine all the women presented with this letter would all have an experience similar to hers, and would happily give their own advice in a very natural way. It vocalises the conversations that are often had, but in private, and away from the eyes of men and forces them into the public realm. This type of collaboration really appeals to me, to provoke an opinion out of people who otherwise may not be interested to comment.
