SOPHIE CALLE: TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

As part of Group 4, I looked at Sophie Calle's work "Take Care of Yourself", which was shown at the 52 Venice Biennale in 2007 and has since been comprehensively compiled into a book of the same name.

Typical to her work, Calle sourced directly from her emotional life, basing the whole work around an e-mail she received from her boyfriend breaking up with her. ("It was a way to take the time to break up. At my own pace. A way to take care of myself.") 107 women (whose occupations ranged from a clown to a lawyer) were commissioned to respond to the e-mail in their professional capacity, and the display of these formed the exhibition.

I question how collaborative this process was. Are the responces obtained to be valued as anything more than contributions?
