Sophie Calle 'Take Care of Yourself'

The project researched within our group was one by the French artist Sophie Calle, 'Take Care of Yourself', which achieved Sophie recognition and success at the 52nd Venice Biennale.

Typically Calle uses her emotional life as topics for her work. She began her career following and photographing strangers, she herself felt lost, and this was a way for her to feel some connection to the places she was in. She has been described in her works much as a voyeur. Often she acts as the character, and other times the narrator. She works with photography, installation and performance.

'Take Care of Yourself' is based on a break-up email that Calle received from her now ex-boyfriend.

Her response to this email was at first a means of dealing with the pain caused; a therapy, but it later turned into an art piece.

Calle collaborated with over 100 women from various professional backgrounds. Professionals such as lawyers, writers, dancers etc. took part, and responded in their own unique way. She commissioned these women to respond to the letter which one could question 'is this collaboration'? As a group we believed it was. The women involved are still responding to the email in a way that they choose, the email was merely a stimulus- Calle's relationship with these women is one of a formal/professional nature, hence the commissioning.
