In august 2009 I am going to the village of Moshi, Tanzania and visiting the inhabitants of this poor community. I will also be participating in a climb up the neighboring Mount Kilimanjaro as a means to raise money for these people through the charity "Childreach international".
I have decided to use this trip as a basis for my Collaborative project, and hopefully have an outcome that will help raise money for this charity to help these unfortunate people.
As a group, we are climbing Kilimanjaro and all raising money for this cause, and i have got in touch with a few of my "fellow climbers" and also the head organiser of the charity "David Milton". He has helped me so far just by answering a few questions i have about the people of Tanzania and how an art project could end up benefiting them. David has also agreed to help me in the future regarding this project and will try and find me contacts in Tanzania.
I have also been contacted by Laura Davies, a fellow climber and student of Leeds University. She has volunteered to meet me this coming Friday and share a few ideas regarding the subject.
The workshops so far have involved introducing me to oxy-acetylene welding and i have a few brief ideas about creating masks in the same style of Tanzanian carvings but using scrap metal and found objects. This may then be exhibited/ sold to raise money im not quite sure yet, its still early days.
I anyone has any ideas please dont hesitate to email me!! Also, you can donate to the Childreach charity through my "Justgiving page" - (www.justgiving.com/jessicahone) every little helps!!
