"Lucy Orta is an artist who uses her studio work together with performances, public interventions and workshops to challenge society and stimulate debate on a wide range of issues, including identity, community, homelessness and the environment."
Her sculptural work investigates the boundaries between body and architecture exploring their common social factors - communication and identity.
In 1993 she founded studio Orta with her partner Jorge Orta with whom she now collaborates.

Refuge Wear (1993-1996):
Represents issues of survival
- Context for her work was the economic recession.
- Wanted to develop a critical and engaged art form that could respond to the growing problems in society.
- Didn't attract any real interest from the art network, which meant she had to be active 'inside' the museum and art centres, and 'outside' on the streets.
- Engaged with 'real-life situations.
1.The work acts as a warning to signal aspects of reality that the media ignore or simplify.
2.The design innovations and the new materials, give the impression that they are operational or functional.
Example projects:
Refuge wear, Survival Kits (1993-95)
Citizen Platform (1997)
Processing Units (1999)
