Group5: Encounters

http://www.sharrowencounters.org.uk/
The group was founded in April 2003 by Ruth Ben-Tovin and Trish O'shea. They set up as a two man team but as word spread the team quickly expanded.
The aim was to open up people ideas and perceptions to art, the environment, education and community, through places they can walk into and get invovled eg. disused shops and mobile shops that tour around.
"Encounters offer imaginative spaces and processes for people to explore their relationship with themselves, each other, where they live and the wider natural world. We specialise in designing and delivering tailor made participatory arts projects and interventions that inspire creativity, dialogue and exchange between people of all ages and cultures. "

^^Mission statement when you enter the website.

"Encounters artists reach members of the community simply by listening. They create art by allowing people a place to come to, a place to talk about our lives and our world”

^^Mission statement also when you enter the website, but this is a quote from Dahlia a Sheffield resident.

Encounters is a Sheffield based collaborative group, heavily based on community work. The publics input is everything in making their work a success.
They work on a local, individual, city and international scales so their limits are always expanding.
Example of previous project: The City Road Project.

Encounters were approached by the council to give some identity or any possible improvements through a creative influence to a area in Sheffield. They began on-street consultations asking passers by to write down any memories, thoughts, stories, directions anything personnal they could work with, and also ran workshops with council members.
