Lucy Orta is a British contemporary visual artist living and working between London and Paris where she has been living since 1991. She was born in 1966 in Sutton Coldfield, Great Britain.
She uses the medium of sculpture, public art, photography and video to realise her work.
The first visual manifestation of Orta’s was the Refuge Wear series, which was a direct response to both the refugee crisis and to the social instability at that time.
It was first noticed in the early 90's. These objects resembled temporary mobile architectures which transformed into poetic items of clothing, sleeping bags, first aid units, for nomadic populations. But she says that these objects are merely for representation but not functional for proper use.
